The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is administered by a priest, who uses the “oleum infirmorum” (oil of the sick) to anoint the forehead and hands of the one being anointed. The practice of anointing is based on James 5:14 which reads, “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord...”

This Sacrament is a not only for those in immediate danger of death, but also for those suffering from physical, mental, or spiritual sickness. Even if there is no physical healing the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with serious illness or the frailty of old age. Just like the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest acts as an instrument through which the Grace of Christ flows, making it Jesus who heals and not the priest. The outward sign of this Sacrament is made present through the oil. For as oil heals the body, so does this holy oil heal the soul wounded by sin.
