The Apostles appointed bishops to lead the new Christian communities after they were gone.  As the Christian communities grew, bishops appointed “elders” to assist them. The Latin word for elders is presbyter and when Christianity spread into Germany during the Middle Ages, they translated the word as Priester. The ‘er’ was eventually dropped, and that is where we get the word “priest.”  The  Apostles also appointed deacons to “...bring communion to the widows who were being neglected” (Acts 6:1-6).  These men became known as “servers”. The Greek word for ‘server’ is diákonos, and this is where we get the word “Deacon”. The appointing of bishops, priests, and deacons - which originated with the Apostles - came to be known as “Apostolic Succession.”

This established a pattern of ordination that would eventually be enshrined in the Sacrament of Holy Orders.  Holy Orders empowers the ordained to bring  people to God in a personal way through their preaching and shepherding.  The more a minister is open to divine Grace, the better an instrument he becomes of the very person of God. The outward sign of this Sacrament is made present through the Chrism Oil. Chrism Oil is used for Ordinations, Confirmations, Blessing of churches & altars, and Baptisms. It symbolizes strength, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and consecrates someone or something to God's service.
